The Nokia Lumia 800, which has made quite the impression on many reviewers and users across the globe, is finally available for purchase in the United States. This announcement makes good on Nokia’s CES promise that the device would be available through official channels stateside, but, like many things, comes with a few caveats. The good news is that the polycarbonate-bodied device is being offered unlocked and unbranded, as well as being bundled with a solid set of useful accessories. The bad news is that this bundle is being offered only through Microsoft’s official retail stores (of which there is only a handful), and, to add insult to injury, will lighten one’s wallet by a soul crushing $899. Yes, you read that correctly: $899 for a device that has been available in many parts of the world for several months now.
Dropping nearly $900 on a mobile device isn’t without precedent – how many of us bought the Nokia E90 upon its release!? So, yes, the cost is high, but the price of admission does score you a bluetooth headset, a pair of Nokia Purity HD headphones, and the wonderfully designed Nokia Play 360 wireless speaker – not a terrible proposition. However, given the fact the LTE-packing, AT&T-exclusive Lumia 900 is on the horizon boasting superior specs, Microsoft’s offering on the Lumia 800 is a difficult pill to swallow and feels light on value.
Anyone actually interested in purchasing this bundle? Any desire I had to buy one from Microsoft, officially, has completely gone out the window.
